The strategic agreement between Iran and Russia: A step toward a comprehensive strategic alliance

The strategic agreement between Iran and Russia is not just an economic or political agreement, but a step towards a comprehensive alliance that strengthens the national sovereignty of both countries and provides a base for long-term cooperation in the face of common challenges, reinforcing the trend towards a multipolar world order.

In an interview with IRNA, Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin stated that the signing of the "Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Treaty" between Iran and Russia is an important step toward strengthening the strategic alliance between the two countries.

The treaty was signed during Iranian President Masoud Bazeshkian's visit to Moscow, where he met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The treaty, the result of nearly three years of negotiations, covers all aspects of cooperation between the two countries, with a special focus on three main areas: economic cooperation, scientific and technological cooperation, and cooperation in the fields of culture and tourism.

The treaty is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation between Iran and Russia in various fields.

In the press interview, Russian intellectual Alexander Dugin considered the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Strategic Treaty between Iran and Russia as an indication of the strategic alliance between the two countries.

Dugin is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's most important advisors, and in 2014 he was named one of the "100 Global Thinkers" of the modern era by Foreign Policy magazine.

"This is a very important event and an agreement based on the strategic alliance between Russia and Iran, which we had to officially register in order for it to have legal effect," Dugin believes. Over the past decade, Russian-Iranian relations have experienced a very positive dynamic, and our economic, political and strategic relations have improved. We have reached a good and unprecedented level of relations between the two countries in history."

Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin described the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Agreement between Iran and Russia as a historic strategic alliance that could strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and propel them toward significant geopolitical and economic gains.

The most important points:

1. Details and significance of the agreement

The agreement, dubbed the "Strategic Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement," spans 25 years and covers multiple fields, including energy, technology, industry, agriculture, and culture.

It was signed during Iranian President Masoud Bazhkian's visit to Moscow, where he met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called it an "unprecedented treaty" aimed at solidifying the foundations of a multipolar world order.

2. Cooperation in key areas

Security and strategy:

The cooperation includes the establishment of a joint security system that could include Russian military bases in southern Iran and Iran's participation in economic and military projects in the Arctic. This cooperation is a tool to enhance regional security and reject Western hegemony.

Economic development:

The agreement includes investments in media, education, space, and joint bank payment systems, helping to mitigate the impact of Western sanctions on the two countries.

The North-South Corridor project is a pillar of cooperation, giving Russia access to open waters through Iran, while Iran has access to the North Sea.

3. Challenges and ways to overcome them

Dugin noted that there are external attempts, especially from the West, to thwart this alliance, citing internal networks that seek to undermine bilateral relations using religious or nationalist arguments.

Despite these challenges, the signing of the agreement demonstrates the ability of the two countries to overcome obstacles and achieve their common goals.

4. Benefits of the Convention at the international level

The agreement will strengthen Iran and Russia's position as key players in Eurasia.

The agreement represents an opportunity to rebalance the geopolitical and economic balance in the region, with a focus on capitalizing on shared resources and addressing international challenges.

What Putin and Bazhakyan had to say about the agreement

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that his country attaches great importance to strengthening relations with Iran in the future, during a press conference he held with his Iranian counterpart Massoud Bazhkian after signing a "comprehensive strategic agreement."

"The agreement with Iran gives a qualitative leap to relations between the two countries," Putin said during the press conference, adding that the talks with the Iranian president were constructive and fruitful and dealt with bilateral relations and regional affairs.

"Regarding trade relations, they are very important and we talked with the president of Iran about these relations and how they should be different from neighboring countries, and there are economic powers, and some countries have smaller populations and weaker economies, but we have more trade with a large country like Iran, and the volume of trade is certainly not commensurate with the power that exists," he said.

"Today's agreement carries new terms and conditions regarding the development of trade relations. We are doing specific work, and the reason for our meeting today is to review issues related to trade and available solutions in technical areas. In the field of energy, I emphasized that Iran has developed its cooperation."

Iranian President Masoud Bazeshkian said during the press conference that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement will strengthen the relationship between Iran and Russia.

"Russia plays a big and important role for Iran and we hope to develop relations in the economic field, and we will overcome obstacles related to economic and trade cooperation with Russia," Bazeshkian said.

"This plan strengthens Iran-Russia relations in the security, economic, cultural and trade fields, and most of the agreements between ministers and experts from the two countries have been finalized and signed today," he said.

He emphasized that Iran considers relations with Russia to be sensitive and vital, and that trade, cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries is moving forward stronger than in the past.
