Military ChatGPT becomes Israel's weapon against Iran
The Jerusalem Post reported in an exclusive report that the IDF's Cyber Information and Communications Unit, known as Matzpen, in collaboration with the Mossad and Shin Bet, designed programs and systems that were used in operations against Iran.
According to the report, during Operation Lion Rising or the Twelve Years War against Iran last June, this unit was able to extend its Big Data analytics capabilities to Iranian territory.
The newspaper reported that Israel used this technique especially in the opening attack during the first hours, targeting several military leaders and nuclear scientists in Iran, and Iranian defenses were unable to repel the attack due to a disturbance created by Israel in advance.
The report pointed to the technical challenges of the operation, explaining that digital software knows no geographical boundaries, but needs physical infrastructure to transfer and operate data. He emphasized that Israel has never before experienced large-scale and sustained operations that allow tracking and updating every minute air or missile strike in real time, but MetSpin has succeeded in doing so even in areas as far away as Iran.
Espoused goal: Enabling field commanders to make quick decisions without technical complexity, hundreds of experts are working behind the scenes to analyze and integrate data from the Army's various cloud systems.
How has artificial intelligence helped Israel?
One of the main roles of the MetSpin unit is to quickly send accurate data on the location of enemy forces to all levels of command. The increasing use of drones for attack and reconnaissance has necessitated real-time data coordination.
MetSpin has created systems that match the location of an attack to the nearest aircraft or counter-attack platform, enabling faster and more accurate responses, and sometimes even deterring enemy groups from continuing to fire. MetSpin's systems also provide accurate maps to friendly forces to minimize the risk of Friendly Fire.
The unit analyzes big data to simulate multiple operational options for field commanders in seconds. In the non-military defense domain, the data is sent to the Home Front Command to determine how best to deal with missile, drone or rocket threats, and to optimize the use of Israel's defense layers.
ChatGPT Military for the Israeli Defense Forces
MetSpin designed a special version of a military ChatGPT that commanders can interact with verbally. This chatbot understands Israeli military culture and jargon, and is a quick decision-making tool for field commanders, allowing them to interact with changing data on the move, not just at a fixed headquarters.
The platform is connected to a cloud similar to Google Drive, has digital and physical modifications to ensure data verification and security, and is capable of working at scale.
How does Israel monitor every square meter of Iran?
According to the report, MAPIT is designing the digital architecture to transmit data from satellites and aerial imagery. The MAPIT platform is connected to other systems and continuously generates 3D maps of various regions, including Iran. The Israeli Defense Ministry has previously announced that Israel is able to monitor hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of Iranian territory on a daily basis.
Drone Detection Accuracy
The recent conflict has taken drone reconnaissance capabilities to a new level, as the digital database records all real-time warnings from any aircraft or aerial platform and immediately sends them to the relevant forces.
As the war gradually winds down and the IDF moves toward peace, it remains unclear what new challenges the Mitzpen unit will face, but experience suggests that the unit's team of programmers and data experts are ready to deal with any new threat in any location, from Gaza to Tehran.
