Iraqi Institute for Dialog Holds a Seminar in Ankara on the Future of Iraqi-Turkish Relations
The Iraqi Institute for Dialog held an extensive seminar in cooperation with the Center for Political, Economic and Social Studies (SETA) in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on 05/02/2026, under the title (New Regional Dynamics and the Future of Iraqi-Turkish Relations), represented by Prof. Dr. Adel Al-Budaiwi, Dean of the College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad and a member of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Salam Jabbar, Assistant to the President of the Institute, Dr. Ali Al-Mamouri, and Dr. Hussein Aslan, an Iraqi expert on Turkish affairs.
The symposium included two sessions, during which regional changes and their interaction within Iraqi-Turkish relations were discussed, ways to overcome the challenges that beset them, and ways to strengthen relations. The workshop comes within the efforts of the Iraqi Institute for Dialog to enhance regional cooperation through the diplomacy of research centers, and the positive impact on decision-makers.
The Iraqi side proposed ways to transform Iraqi-Turkish relations into a coalition of bases based on the consolidation and sustainability of relations, the protection and consolidation of interests, and the achievement and promotion of security, to reach an Iraqi vision that the nucleus of the "alliance of bases" is available today through the development road project (through a vision and procedures), which opens the way for cooperation and sustainable regional economic integration.
Economically, the symposium discussed the path of development, which will bring economic, political and security returns to the region in general and not only to Iraq and Turkey, not to mention the issue of water, and cooperation between Iraq and Turkey to increase water releases, strengthen the water infrastructure in Iraq, and cooperation in the field of agriculture, and related industries.
And the historical ties between Iraq and Turkey, which strengthen cooperation, and make it in a natural context, as was the Syrian issue present at the symposium, and the Iraqi role in strengthening regional security and overcoming points of disagreement to achieve cooperative security.
Over the course of the two sessions, positive results were reached, and an agreement was reached on a joint seminar to be held in Baghdad, not to mention the invitation of the head of the SITA Center, Dr. Murat Yeshiltash, and the official of the Iraqi file at the center, Dr. Bilkay Domain, to attend the Baghdad Dialog Forum.
