National Parliamentary Elections in Iraq: A Western Perspective

Translated from a Western perspective, this study examines Iraq's 2010 national parliamentary elections, highlighting U.S. interests in free and credible elections that lead to the emergence of new leaders and coalitions.

The analysis focuses on assessing the political landscape on the eve of the elections, detailing competing coalitions such as Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law and the Iraqi National Coalition, as well as focusing on sectarian and ethnic divisions among Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds, especially on vital issues such as the election law and the future of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

The study concludes that the electoral process may be a criterion for progress, but at the same time it may increase instability, expecting it to be the primary battle between competing Shiite lists.
